Vacuum Gas Oil (VGO) is a product of the vacuum distillation process in crude oil refining. During this process, residual oil from the atmospheric distillation column undergoes further separation under vacuum conditions, which lowers the boiling point and allows for the extraction of lighter hydrocarbons. VGO is composed of a complex mixture of hydrocarbons with varying molecular weights. It is typically categorized into two types: lighter VGO (LVGO) and heavier VGO (HVGO). VGO has a high boiling point, usually above 370�°C (700�°F), and its density ranges from 0.85 to 0.95 grams per cubic centimeter. It also boasts a low sulfur content, making it a valuable feedstock for subsequent refining processes. The primary use of VGO is as a feedstock in catalytic cracking units, such as Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) and Hydrocracking units. These processes convert VGO into lighter and more valuable products, including gasoline and diesel. Additionally, VGO can be blended into residual fuel oil, although its higher value as a feedstock often makes this less common. Despite its efficiency in producing lighter fuels, the production and use of VGO have environmental implications.
