The principle colouring component of marigold flowers is lutein, a fat-soluble carotenoid, which is responsible for the yellow to orange colour to the dye. It also contains galenite, lycopene, V-carotene. Marigold contains some or many medicinal properties. It is used internally in the treatment of indigestion, colic, severe constipation, cough and dysentry.
