Gum Arabic, also known as gum sudani, acacia gum, arabic gum, gum acacia, acacia, Senegal gum and Indian gum, and by other names, is a natural gum consisting of the hardened sap of two species of the acacia (Sensu lato) tree, the Acacia senegal (now known as Senegalia senegal) and Vachellia (Acacia) seyal. The term â??gum arabicâ?? does not indicate a particular botanical source. In a few cases soâ??called â??gum arabicâ?? may not even have been collected from acacia species, but may originate from Combretum, Albizia or some other genus. The gum is harvested commercially from wild trees, mostly in Sudan (80%) and throughout the Sahel, from Senegal to Somalia. The name â??gum Arabicâ??(al-samgh al-â??arabi) was used in the Middle East at least as early as the 9th century.

The unground product occurs as white to orange-brown, spheroidal tears of varying size or in angular fragments. Gum arabic is also available commercially in the form of white to yellowish-white flakes, granules, powder, roller dried, or spray-dried material. In Nigeria, the plant grows in areas with rainfall range between 250-1000mm with temperatures between 20-400C. However, Acacia spp such as Acacia dudgeoni, Acacia gourmaensis and some species of Acacia sieberain are also found in Osun and Oyo States.
