Crush, tear, curl is a method of processing black tea in which the leaves are passed through a series of cylindrical rollers with hundreds of sharp teeth that crush, tear, and curl the tea into small, hard pellets.

CTC delivers a dark strong brew quickly, though sometimes at the expense of the more subtle aromas of tea. In the Orthodox (or long leaf) method, tea leaves are delicately handled to ensure minimal breakage.

Black tea is fully oxidized and has a darker appearance, stronger flavour, and higher caffeine content compared to other teas. The caffeine content in black tea is still around half the level of coffee. Black teas are processed in either of two ways, CTC (crush, tear, curl) or orthodox. Often black teas can be consumed with sugar, milk, or lemon and offer some of the same health benefits as other teas.
