Corn gluten meal is a by-product of the manufacture of maize starch (and sometimes ethanol) by the wet-milling process (RFA, 2008). Corn gluten meal is a protein-rich feed, containing about 65% crude protein (DM), used as a source of protein, energy, and pigments for livestock species including fish. It is also valued in pet food for its high protein digestibility (RFA, 2008). Its fiber is highly digestible by ruminants and corn gluten feed can be substituted for grains, such as maize grain, to reduce the starch load in the rumen

Feeding Recommendations

Requirements will differ depending on the current diet. It is recommended a maximum of 20% (of the total ration) be fed on a dry matter basis. Corn Gluten Feed can be mixed with silage in the paddock, on the feed pad, or in blends. Corn gluten feed is a by-product obtained from the wet milling process, where the corn kernel is separated into starch, oil, protein, and bran components. Initially, the corn undergoes soaking in sulfurous acid, resulting in steep liquor containing protein, minerals, vitamins, and energy sources. The swollen kernel then undergoes extraction to isolate starch and oil. The remaining fiber or bran is combined with the steep liquor. The resulting wet corn gluten feed can be dried to approximately 90 percent dry matter, referred to as Dry Corn Gluten Feed.
