TPVs are formed in a reactive compounding process that is usually the combination of a polyolefin (Polypropylene or Polyethylene) with an elastomer (SBR, NR, EPDM, NBR or Butyl). In a reactive compounding process, the elastomer is completely cured. This dynamic vulcanization process in TPV production generates the webbed network in the elastomer domain while still retaining melt- processing capabilities. TPV consists of micron size cross-linked elastomer particles dispersed throughout a continuous matrix of thermoplastic material. Because of its thermoplasticity and melt flowability, TPV can be processed on standard thermoplastic equipments (such as injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, calendaring, overmolding etc.) with the efficiency and economy associated with thermoplastic materials.
