Polystyrene (PS), abbreviated as PS, refers to a polymer synthesized by free radical addition reaction of styrene monomer, with the chemical formula (C8H8) n. It is a colorless and transparent thermoplastic with a glass transition temperature higher than 100, so it is often used to make various disposable containers that need to withstand the temperature of boiling water, as well as disposable foam lunch boxes.

The English name for polystyrene is Polystyrene, abbreviated as PS. PS is a thermoplastic non crystalline resin that is polymerized from styrene monomers and can be synthesized through various synthetic methods. In industry, bulk polymerization and suspension polymerization are mainly used. PS is mainly divided into general grade polystyrene (GPPS, commonly known as transparent benzene), impact grade polystyrene (HIPS, commonly known as modified benzene), and foam grade polystyrene (EPS).
General grade polystyrene is a thermoplastic resin that is colorless, odorless, odorless, and glossy, transparent, bead like or granular solid.General grade polystyrene is a thermoplastic resin that is colorless, odorless, odorless, and glossy, transparent, bead like or granular solid. It is soluble in Aromatic hydrocarbon, chlorinated hydrocarbons, aliphatic ketones and esters, but can only swell in acetone. It can withstand the action of certain mineral oils, organic acids, alkalis, salts, lower alcohols, and their aqueous solutions. Low water absorption, able to maintain its mechanical properties and dimensional stability in humid environments. The optical performance is second only to acrylic resin. Excellent electrical performance, high volume and surface resistivity, and unaffected by temperature and humidity changes, as well as corona discharge. The radiation resistance is also very good. Its main drawbacks are brittle and easy to crack, low impact strength, poor heat resistance, and inability to withstand boiling water. It can only be used at lower temperatures and loads. Poor sunlight resistance and flammability. When burning, it emits black smoke and has a special odor.
Polystyrene (PS) plastic is a naturally transparent thermoplastic that is available as both a typical solid plastic as well in the
form of a rigid foam material. PS plastic is commonly used in a variety of consumer product applications and is also particularly
useful for commercial packaging.
Polystyrene (PS) for Prototype Development on CNC Machines and 3D Printers: Polystyrene is available in sheet stock, rod stock,
and in various shapes. It is a great candidate for subtractive machining processes on a CNC machine. Colors are usually limited to
clear, white, and black although colors can be added and it is an excellent candidate for external painting.
Polystyrene (PS) for Injection Molding:
General Purpose Polystyrene (GPPS) and High Impact Polystyrene (HIPS) are probably the most commonly used PS resins for injection
molding. GPPS is clear, but brittle (think of a CD jewel case) while HIPS is opaque and much less brittle.
