In these obsolete systems, the master clock is closely monitored by staff for its accuracy and the slave clocks are periodically synchronized with the master clock. The traditional master-slave configuration requires a wired communication network which has its own installation costs and maintenance cost, making the total capital cost and maintenance cost of the system much higher. With the fall in cost of GPS hardware, GPS clocks nearly same as traditional clocks but have no network and/ or maintenance requirements.
