Ferrosilicon is often used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking because silicon combines easily with oxygen to form silicon dioxide. Furthermore, the formation of silica releases a large amount of heat, which also helps to raise the temperature of the steel.

Ferrosilicon is an alloy of iron and silicon (average content is 15% to 90%). It is a key ferroalloy used for deoxidation and alloying of steel. Silicon increases the hardness, tensile strength, elasticity and flow limits of steel, improves oxidation resistance and reduces energy losses.
