Palm Shell Charcoal can be used to replace coke from coal in metallurgical processes. Due to its low sulfur and ash content and high calorific value, Palm Shell Charcoal is arguably a better fuel and even cheaper than coke. In addition, since CO2 produced from charcoal is not counted as a Greenhouse Gas, the use of Palm Shell Charcoal has the possibility of a CDM project. The use test in the Electric Arc Furnace showed that there were no adverse effects, which were initially associated with the high volatile material as well as better electrical energy savings than in the case of coke of a high volatile content.
