Octopus (octopus spp) Spread across 300 different species the Octopus is a soft limbed mollusc which has eight limbs to use. It is a bilaterally symmetrical animal and has two eyes and a beak. Thanks to its soft body the octopus can change shape and move around in between nooks and corners too. When they move around the eight appendages tend to follow them. It is said that an Octopus has a complex nervous system but obviously good eyesight and thus are the most behaviourally diverse of all invertebrates. You will find an octopus in various parts of the sea like pelagic waters, coral reefs and the sea beds. Most of the species of octopus grow very quickly leading to early maturity and subsequent death. Octopus has been aptly used in various forms of mythology and certain fantasy books as well. Blue Swimming Crab (Portunus Pelagicus) The blue swimming crab is a huge crab which can be found in estuaries around Australia and New Caledonia. All over the world, it has been given multiple names like flower crab, blue crab, blue swimmer crab, blue manna crab or sand crab. Males of this species are blue in colour and have white spots on its body. The females, on the other hand, have a dull brown or green colour and are identified due to their round carapace. During the winter and in day time you would find the blue crab buried under the sand. When its high tides they may come out to feed upon bivalves, fish and macroalgae. They are considered to be excellent swimmers and their flattened legs look like paddles. But they are unable to survive out of the water for very long periods of time. Found largely in the Indopacific region it is eaten widely in the region. It is one of the high prized species and its meat has a sweet taste to it. In the Persian Gulf, the species is cultivated for meat consumption and the females are considered a better option. The blue crab is also fished in Australia and available to the regular fishers. Green Crab (Portunus Sanguinolentus) A common littoral crab this one is known by multiple names across the world. In the British Isles, this species goes by the name shore crab or green shore crab. This variety is invasive in nature and has been listed in the top 100 â??world's worst alien invasive species." Though it is a native to the Atlantic Ocean and the Baltic Sea it can also be found inhabiting Australia, South America and South Africa. At maturity, the carapace is of a 90 mm width and its food is usually a variety of small crustaceans, molluscs and worms. The colour of this species can vary from green, brown, grey and red. It is believed that those who delay their moulting turn into a red colour. These red ones are considered to be much more aggressive as compared to others. The presence of green crab can be harmful to the ecosystems and hence its growth is restricted externally. Native blue crab of America contributes largely to the restriction in population. It is therefore fished on a very small scale in the northeast Atlantic Ocean and 1200 tonnes are caught annually. Mud Crab (Scylla Serrata) The mud or mangrove crab is found in mangroves and estuaries of Australia, Asia and Africa. Their shell is of green or brown colour and hence the name is given. Its natural region is around the Indo Pacific area. Thus you can find it from South Africa, the Indian Ocean to the Malay Archipelago, and from southern Japan to south-eastern Australia, and as far east as Fiji and Samoa. Nowadays this species has been introduced in Hawaii and Florida. Since they were imported from American Samoa they are given the name Samoan crab in Hawaii. Their big size and delicious meat makes their demand high and led to over crabbing, To stop the same the government has had to put a ban on the crabbing of species less than 6 inches of size. The juveniles are residents of Mangroves while sub adults can be found in the high tide region. On the other hand, the adults are seen in the low tide zone. The mud crabs are cannibalistic in nature. When they are moulting they have a tendency to devour other crabs around them. Females of this species give birth to a million offspring and thus their population never goes down. Goinar (Solenocera Crassicornis) The Goinar is seen in the Indo Pacific region. It can be found in regions starting from the Persian Gulf to India and from the east to Papua New Guinea. Off late, this variety has been introduced in the Mediterranean region as well. The length of the Goinar at maturity is around 8.6 metre. However, it is believed that its average length would remain around 6-6.5 cm. The weight range if the Goinar remains between 3.7 to 13.5 grams. This species is usually found in the muddy bottoms of seas ranging at a depth of around 85 metres. You can also look for them at the mouth of estuaries. During the day time, the Goinar is found burrowing inside the mud hence the need to stay deep. At this time you only see its antennular flagella are sticking out. These antennas then help the Goinar to respirate freely. For mating, it uses its olfactory and tactile cues and indirectly transfers its sperm to the female species. Trachurus Trachurus The Magalaspis Cordyla or Trachurus Trachurus can be widely found in the Indopacific region. Its expanse starts from South Africa in the west to Tonga in the east. The fish usually can be seen in the topmost layers of inshore and offshore ocean waters. Trachurus Trachurus is known for its torpedo shape and that is why it is also known by the name Torpedo Scad. You can visibly notice its finlets which are seen close to its dorsal and anal fins. The largest species of this fish was known to weigh around 4 kg with a length of 80 centimetres. However, the majority of Trachurus Trachurus found lies in the length range of less than 40 centimetres. The spawning of this breed happens between March and July and due importance is given to its reproductive cycle at that time. Black Pomfret (Parastromateus Niger) TThis Indo west Pacific region occupant is found from Australia to Japan and from Africa to Borneo. The intensity of black colour differs for most varieties, where some are much dark in comparison to others. Even though it is one of the most commercial species there is no danger of it getting endangered. The Black pomfret can grow to a length of a maximum 29 inches. Its flesh stays together and can be easily used for any form of wet cooking too. Overall too you can consider it as a very good fish for cooking. The Black pomfret has very tiny scales on its body and thus it is easy to scrape them off before preparing for cooking. Taste of the black pomfret is quite mild and not bland at all. You would notice a dark strip under its skin but that does not harm the taste of the fish. While cooking its skin shrinks thus making it perfect for being used for baking or steaming. Silver-Pomfret (Pampus Argenteus) Residing in the coastal areas of Middle East, South and South East Asia the Silver Pomfret is a famous species of butterfish. Having migrated some time back you can also find the fish in the Mediterranean region. All the fish in this family are known to have flat bodies, long pectoral fins and forked tail fins. An inshore species you would find them mostly in groups near muddy bottoms of the sea. Indian Mackerel (Rastrelliger Kanagurta) Found commonly in the West Pacific and the Indian Ocean the Indian Mackerel is a subspecies of the Mackerel family from Order Perciformes. One of the very important food fish in this region you would find it as a crucial part of South and South East Asian cuisines. The range of the Indian Mackerel spreads from the Red Sea and East Africa to Indonesia and China. Body of the Indian Mackerel is deep and usually, the head is longer than the depth of its body. Its maxilla is covered to an extent by the lacrimal bone and extends through the hind margin of its eye. You will also find a black spot which has pretty close to the lower margin of its pectoral fin. With a fork length of around 35 centimetres, the Indian Mackerel has an average length of 25 centimetres. Silver Croaker (Pennahia argentata) The silver croaker or Pennahia argentata I avidly found in the Northwest Pacific region from Japan, Hong Kong to North Korea and Yellow sea. Its length at maturity remains around 14 cm but there have been instances where fishes of high length like 40 cm have also been found. With regards to its dorsal rays, they are around 11 in number while dorsal soft rays can be anywhere from 25-28. The Silver croaker has 2 anal spines and 7-8 anal soft rays with close to 25 vertebrae to give support to the body. Posterior end of its pectoral fin extends along the posterior end of its spinous dorsal fin and is a remarkable feature of its body. There are no markings seen inside the lower jaw teeth and the length of its second anal spine is almost equal to the diameter of its eye. Silver Croaker is mostly seen in muddy and shallow waters and you have to delve deep to bring them out. Mostly you find these little fish preying and eating other small fishes and invertebrates that they find easily available. Pumpus Argenteus The tropical Pumpus Argenteus can be traced at the coasts from the Persian Gulf to Borneo. Also considered as a butterfish the Pumpus Argenteus can grow up to size 23 inches. However, the most common species size ranges to around 10 inches with a weight of about 9 1/2 ounces. Though the Pumpus Argenteus is popular commercially it does not fall in the endangered category and might expand its range further by 2050. Having soft white flesh and a non- fleshy flavour the Pumpus Argenteus is consumed in a lot of places. When cooked the flesh disintegrates and provides a suitable flavour to the dish. Unfortunately, the fillets of the fish are pretty soft and cannot be used for preparing the soup. Mostly the fish is steamed whole with just a few slashes across its skin. It is this quality which makes the Pumpus Argenteus a prized catch for many. The fin rays of the White Pomphret hold together well and you usually find less ribs to handle. With the same slashes, you can also bake the pomfret and consume without any worries. You can easily find the Pumpus Argenteus in countries like the Philippines, China and Southeast Asian countries. The giant tiger prawn is a crustacean that is actively reared for food purposes. Initially, the species was first discovered in the year 1798. The females of the species reach a length of 33 cm and their weight is around 200-320 grams. On the other hand, the males have a length of 20-25 cm and their weight can be near to 100-170 grams. The carapace and abdomen of both are banded with red and white stripes. Naturally, the Tiger prawn is found in the Indo pacific region. This goes from the eastern coast of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula to Southeast Asia, the Pacific Ocean, and northern Australia. They can be seen in the Gulf of Mexico too. Their first capturing happened in 1988 when nearly 300 of them were held from the South Eastern shore. Now they can be caught in the waters ranging from Texas to North Carolina. The Tiger prawn can stay in different types of settings but when they grow up you can find them in estuaries and mangroves only. Black tiger prawn variety is said to be nocturnal. Sand Lobster (Thenus Orientalis) A subspecies of slipper lobster which is found in the Indian and the Pacific Ocean. There are a number of names that this species is associated with one of them being the Sand Lobster. Apart from that Bay lobster and flathead lobster are two other names that it is associated with it. Since it is quite often found near Moreton Bay in Australia it is sometimes referred to as the Moreton Bay bug. The sand lobster is a favourite in Singapore and there it is also called Crayfish. Many Singaporean dishes are made from the sand lobster. This species is quite often confused with the Balmain Bug. However, the placement of the eyes demarcates the two clearly. The eyes of the sand lobster are placed at the margin of the carapace. Sand lobsterâ??s maximum length reaches to around 25 centimetres and the body is strongly depressed by shape. Its carapace length can also reach up to 5 centimetres on the whole. The species distribution is around Indo West Pacific area which starts from the east coast of Africa (the southern Red Sea, to Natal) to China and the Persian Gulf, southern Japan, the Philippines and from the Western Australian zone to Queensland. Squid- White (Loligo Duvauceli) Cephalopods by origin Squids have large eyes, elongated bodies, two tentacles and eight arms. Similar to other counterparts they have a mantle, distinct head and bilateral symmetry. Just like an octopus, they have a very soft body but it has a small skeleton which is shaped like a pen. They use their two tentacles to grab the prey and the eight arms to hold it tight. The beak they have is used to cut the prey into pieces and swallow it. They usually locate their prey and then by jet propulsion move very quickly to reach and attack it. Surprisingly squids are considered to be the most intelligent of all the invertebrates found on earth. Squids can also camouflage and escape from predators. They are bioluminescent and use the light also for camouflage. In commercial fisheries found in Japan, the Mediterranean, the south-western Atlantic, the eastern Pacific the squid are nurtured for consumption. Also called the cuttles these molluscs fall under the order of Sepiida. They are known for having an internal shell which goes by the name the cuttlebone. Their distinctive feature is the presence of large W shaped pupils, two tentacles and eight arms. These tentacles have suckers using which they trap their prey and hold it tightly. Their Average size ranges from 15-20 centimetres though the longest variety seen went up to a length of 50 centimetres. The diet of a cuttlefish includes other cuttlefish, shrimps, molluscs, crab and octopus. The average life expectancy of the cuttlefish is between one to two years and their predators are sharks, dolphins, seals, fishes etc. Similar to other molluscs these also have abundant stores of ink in their bodies. This ink is released when these fish are supposedly attacked. The cuttlefish ink is used for multiple purposes like making the food sweet, flavour rice and pasta, and for dyeing plastics and other materials. Cuttlefish also have a camouflage facility which they use to change the colour of their skin. This trick is aptly used to hunt and scare their prey and attack them.
