Mill scale, is formed on the outer surfaces of plates, sheets or profiles when they are being produced by rolling hot iron or steel billets in rolling or steel mills.
It looks like a hard brittle sand and is mainly composed of iron oxides, mostly ferric, and is bluish black in color.
Being produced during the reheating, conditioning and hot rolling operation for the production of steel articles, the mill scale initially adheres to the steel surface and protects it from atmospheric corrosion, provided no break occurs in this coating.
From the chemical and physical analysis performed on the scrap, and according to the european environmental rules, the material has been classified as a special non dangerous waste, listed in green list
In particular the mill scale can be classified as follows:
Einecs (european commission no.): 266-007-8
Waste code: 10 02 10
Basel code: b 12 30
Hs code: 2619.00

Ball clay is a silicate clay rock of which kaolinite is the main constituent:
Al2Si2O5(OH)4.

Ball clays are kaolinitic clays in the family of silicate minerals. It commonly consists of kaolinite, mica, quartz silica, as well as few organic matters. Ball clay is formed from the weathering and transportation by water of parent rocks. Seams in the same deposit may vary in composition, depending on the quantity of the principal and accessory minerals.

Ball clays are fine-grained, highly plastic clays, which are principally used in the manufacture of ceramic whiteware and sanitaryware where they are appreciated for their plasticity, unfired strength and their light colour on firing. Selected clays can even give pure white end products.
Among others, ball clays are also used in refractories, in polymers, in adhesives and sealants and in horticulture as soil amendments.
Ball clay is particularly valued as a base material in the manufacture of ceramics.
Combined with kaolin, ball clays provide the cohesion and workability necessary for the creation of ceramic parts such as sanitaryware. While using it with kaolin, feldspar and quartz in tableware, ball clay confers high plasticity and a good white-fired colour to the end product.
In wall and floor tiles, ball clays are prized for their plasticity and bonding properties.
In glazes and engobes, they ensure a perfect finish.
Electrical porcelain insulators Ball contain plastic clays to provide insulation from high voltage currents.

Ball clay is a really good sandy clay that burns light to near-white. They are most commonly used to make white ceramics and are renowned for their flexibility, unfired endurance, and light fired color. A mixture of minerals, primarily kaolinite, mica, and quartz, make up ball clay. The predominant colors are white, brown, and gray.

What are the main uses of Ball Clay?

Ball Clay is used in a variety of ways in the ceramics industry, including sanitary ware, tableware, wall and floor tiles, and glazes. In a ceramic body, it works as a binding assistant and contributes to plasticity, workability, and strength.

What are other uses?

Ball Clay is a high-quality, long-lasting product. It is widely used in the construction industry, horticulture, agriculture, and recreation industries, and as an extender in polymers, plastics, fertilizers, and insecticides.

What are the Disadvantages of Ball Clay?

Ball clay has a significant disadvantage. Because of too much shrinkage during drying and burning, they cannot be used on their own

Ball Clay is a variety of Kaolinite, like china-clay. It differs from china-clay in having high plasticity and less refractoriness. In chemical composition, ball and china clays do not differ greatly except that the former contains a larger proportion of silica. It has derived its name from the practice of removing it in the form of ball-like lumps from the clay pits in the UK.

Ball clays are kaolinitic sedimentary clays that commonly consist of 20-80% kaolinite, 10-25% mica, 6-65% quartz. Localized seams in the same deposit have variations in composition, including the quantity of the major minerals, accessory minerals and carbonaceous materials such as lignite. They are fine-grained and plastic in nature, and, unlike most earthenware clays, produce a fine quality white-coloured pottery body when fired, which is the key to their popularity with potters. Ball clays are relatively scarce deposits due to the combination of geological factors needed for their formation and preservation.
