D2/1.2379 cold work tool steel is chrome-molybdenum-vanadium steel with big hardenability for hardening in oil and in air, especially high resistance to the wear (higher than by 1.2080), good cutting power, very good firmness in the pressure, lower toughness (but higher than by 1.2080). This steel shows good dimensional stability at the heat treatment, suitable for hardening to the secondary hardness (the possibility of nitriding). Further the steel is very difficult to sharpen, it works at the heat with difficulties and has a rather difficult workability in the annealed state.
D2/1.2379 is suitable for making tools for cold cutting, i.e. all kinds of tools with the long durability for cutting on presses and punching of materials of smaller thicknesses and materials of high hardness (especially difficult-shape tools for cutting, e.g. transformer metal sheets and metal sheets from stainless steels), knives for plate shears for the sheet and strip steel up to thickness of 10 mm of sheared material, knives for wire cutting etc. Tools for mechanical working such as e.g. smaller girders and tools for drawing, all kinds of tools for transformation and punching of materials. Further the steel is suitable for simple and symmetric tools for pressing and pushing, tools for thread rolling, plain and profile rolls, swages and also for cold work. Cutting tools such as broaching thorns, profile knives and difficult-shape milling machines for lower cutting speeds and for treatment of nonmetallic abrasive materials. Further the steel is applied in the production of highly stressed molds and their components for working of plastic and powder substances, glass, porcelain and ceramic materials. By tools for crushing and grinding it is used for hammers of crushers and jaws for mild grinding and crushing.

P20 tool steel differs from area to area in the different countries.Europeans generally use the DIN spec-DIN EN ISO 4957 standard materials (1.2311 and 1.2312), while in Japan steel industry standard, PX5 is the new standard P20. And the Americas Countries, Grade steel P20 is the most and wide used steel grade material. In China, 3CrM2Mo is the P20 steel grade equivalent, which is in the standard GB/T 1299 tool steel specification.

AISI P20 tool steels are nitrided or carburized. These P20 mold steel materials steels are capable of being machined into complex and large dies and molds. Material P20 steel plate and round bars are mostly used in the carburized condition. The presence of chromium and nickel enhances the toughness and hardness of mold steel P20 grade material.

FORGING:Heating for forging must be done slowly and uniformly. Soak through at F and reheat as often as necessary, stopping work when the temperature drops below 1700 After forging, cool slowly in lime, mica, dry ashes or furnace. D2 should always be annealed after forging.
ANNEALING: Heat slowly to 1550 , hold until entire mass is heated through, and cool slowly in the furnace (40 F per hour) to about 1000 , after which cooling rate may be increased. Suitable precautions must be taken to prevent excessive carburization or decarburization.
STRESS RELIEVING: When desirable to relieve the strains of machining, heat slowly to -1250& , allow to equalize, and then cool in still air (Strain Relieving).
PREHEAT PRIOR TO HARDENING: Preheat slowly to 1350 and hold at this temperature until material is uniformly heated.
HARDENING:After thorough preheating, heat to . Hold the work piece at the hardening temperature until it is completely and uniformly heated.
QUENCHING: D2 steel is an air hardening steel and will develop hardness on cooling in still air. To avoid scaling and prevent decarburization of the work piece surface, controlled atmosphere or vacuum furnaces are recommended. If these furnaces are not available, pack hardening, salt baths or wrapping the piece in stainless steel foil will provide some degree of surface protection in the hardening process. Parts should be allowed to cool to 150F, or to where they can be held in the bare hand, and then temper immediately.
TEMPERING: The tempering temperature may be varied according to the desired hardness. If maximum hardness is desired, tempering should be in the range , but if a lower hardness is acceptable, tempering at F will give the optimum combination of hardness and toughness.

Introduction
AISI A2 Cold Work Tool Steel air hardening, with maximum dimensional stability during heat treatment, offering high abrasion resistance and good toughness. Generally supplied annealed to HB 231 max. A2 steel is an air hardening, cold work, tool steel. A 5% Chromium steel which provides high hardness after heat treatment with good dimensional stability. It is heat treatable and will offer a hardness in the range 57-62 HRC.
Applications
AISI A2 steel takes a place in tool steel range between AISI O1 and AISI D2, offering an excellent combination of good wear resistance and toughness. It may be regarded, therefore, as a ¡¡ãuniversal¡¡À cold work steel.
For cutting operations the good toughness of AISI A2 gives excellent resistance to chipping of the cutting edge. In many cases tools made from this steel have given better tooling economy than high-carbon, high-chromium steels of the D3/W.-Nr. 2080 type.
AISI A2 steel has much better machining and grinding properties. It can be used to make Bending Dies, Blanking Dies, Block Gauges, Cams, Coining Dies, Cold Forming Dies, Cold Shears, Cold Trimming Dies, Forming Dies, Knurls, Machine Parts, Mandrels, Plastic Mold Dies, Punch Plates, Punchers, Reamers, Ring Gauges, Roll Threading Dies, Rolls, Shear Blades, Slitters, Stamping Dies, Threading Taps, Trimming Dies, etc.
HEAT TREATMENT
Forging: Heat slowly toC then more rapidly to 1050-1100 Avoid working below . Reheat as often as necessary to maintain proper forging temperature. After forging cool very slowly. Heat slowly and uniformly. Cool in vermiculite or in other insulating media. Anneal after forging.
Annealing: Soak thoroughly at then slow furnace cool at a rate of not more than 20C per hour. After annealing A2 a maximum hardness of 215 Brinell may be achieved.Protect against surface decarburization using controlled atmosphere or by pack-annealing.
Hardening: Pre heat slowly to 600-700and soak. Continue heating to the final hardening temperature of 950/980 and allow the component to equalise. Quench in oil or cool in air.Temper immediately after hardening. Allow to cool to 125-F before tempering. Soak time is 15 minutes per inch of thickness. Minimum of 30 minutes.
Tempering: Heat uniformly and thoroughly to the desired temperature and hold for 25 minutes per cm of thickness. A2 can be double tempering, after intermediate cooling to room temperature. Temper at 200C for a balance of hardness and strength or where strength is more important than hardness.Complete equalization of temperature throughout the tools is essential for good results. Double temper. Recommended temperature is 400-1000
