Bauxite is a naturally occurring mineral comprising mainly of aluminium hydroxides (the trihydrate Gibbsite Al(OH)3and the AlOOH monohydrate polymorphs boehmite and diaspore), with other components in the mineral typically being silica, iron oxide, titania and aluminosilicates (clay etc). Calcined Bauxite is obtained by calcining (heating in a Kiln) superior grade Bauxite at high temperatures (8500C to 16000C), this process removes the crystalline moisture leading to a higher alumina content. Compared to an alumina content of about 57 % to 58 % in raw Bauxite, Calcined Bauxite has an alumina content of 84 % to 88 %. Calcined Bauxite is used as raw material for manufacturing fused alumina and high alumina refractories. Activated Bauxite is an excellent adsorbent material with multiple applications. Thermal activated bauxite is used for refining of lubricant oil and waxes. In its mineral form Bauxite, Aluminium is the most abundant metal in the earth's crust. Bauxite contains one of a variety of hydrated aluminium oxides (gibbsite, boehmite or diaspore), which are often expressed as Al2O3xH2O but are more commonly regarded as impure Al2O3. Bauxite is claylike and earthy, and ranges in colour from white to deep brown or red according to the nature and quantity of its components. The major impurities in Bauxite are iron oxides (goethite & hematite), silicon dioxide, the clay mineral kaolinite as well as small amounts of anatase (TiO2). Consequently, its composition varies considerably with alumina constituting from about 50% to about 70%. Rotary kiln calcined bauxite is obtained by calcining superior grade bauxite at high temperatures (from 850 to 1600) in the rotary kiln. This removes moisture thereby increasing the alumina content. Compared to an alumina content of about 57% to 58% in raw bauxite, calcined bauxite has an alumina content of 84% to 88%.
