Malabar Reef Cod (Epinephelus Malabaricus) Malabar Reef Cod can be easily found in the waters of the Indo West Pacific region. You can find them in Africa, Tonga and the Red Sea along with other countries. In the Eastern Mediterranean region, the fish can be found in the Levantine Sea. Mostly the Malabar Reef cod are found in groups in places like lagoons, mangroves, sandy and muddy areas, coral and rocky reefs etc. The average size for a Malabar reef cod is around 39 inch though at times longer varieties up to 92 inches have also been seen. Colour of this species is light to dark brown and it has a few spots on its body. As it grows old the number of such spots increases on a regular basis. You would also notice some brown diagonal stripes on the body. The younger variety would have wide, brown stripes across the body. Its tail fin is rounded and the by the time they age the colour becomes much more uniform. In many countries, the Malabar reef cod is harvested for food and sport and even grown in aquaculture. Ribbon Fish (Lepturacanthus savala) A pelagic fish they are named so because of their slim shape. The Ribbonfish has a long compressed body which is tape-like and has a short head. There is no anal fin and the dorsal fin extends till the tail of the fish. The pectoral fins of the ribbon fish are small while the pelvic fins may comprise of one ray only. If there is a caudal fin present than it has two fascicles of rays out of which the upper one is prolonged and moving outwards. Ribbon Fish has all the characteristics of fishes which occupy the lower depths of water. Their fins and the membrane that connects them are considered to be quite delicate. In some of the young ribbon fishes, the fin rays are quite elongated and they are often accompanied by appendages. Specimens of the ribbon fish have been found in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, the Bay of Bengal, at Mauritius, and in the Pacific. In England, the north Atlantic species has been given the name dealfish. The length of the ribbon fish may range from 5 to 8 feet but occasionally it may reach up to a size of 20 feet. Found in the eastern Pacific Ocean the White leg shrimp as it is also known as is farmed for food on a regular basis. In some places, people also refer to it as the King prawn or the Pacific White Shrimp. On the outset, the Vannamei Shrimp can grow to a total length of 230 mm. The length of its carapace only grows to 90 mm. The adult white leg shrimps are found in the sea at a depth of around 72 metres and the young ones can be seen thronging the estuaries. Its rostrum is moderately long and has 7-10 feet on the dorsal side while it has two to four teeth on the ventral side. The white leg shrimp is mostly found in temperatures above the level of 20 degrees. In the 20th century, this species was very crucial for the fisherman of this region. However, by the end of the decade fisheries became overcome by aquaculture. In fact, in El Nino years the temperature rose and the population of the Vannamei Shrimp declined and vice versa. 9 years back Greenpeace foundation added the same to the seafood red list. This includes species which are easily sold in fisheries and can be easily sourced from unsustainable fisheries. They use their two tentacles to grab the prey and the eight arms to hold it tight. The beak they have is used to cut the prey into pieces and swallow it. They usually locate their prey and then by jet propulsion move very quickly to reach and attack it. Surprisingly squids are considered to be the most intelligent of all the invertebrates found on earth. Squids can also camouflage and escape from predators. They are bioluminescent and use the light also for camouflage. In commercial fisheries found in Japan, the Mediterranean, the south-western Atlantic, the eastern Pacific the squid are nurtured for consumption. Also called the cuttles these molluscs fall under the order of Sepiida. They are known for having an internal shell which goes by the name the cuttlebone. Their distinctive feature is the presence of large W shaped pupils, two tentacles and eight arms. These tentacles have suckers using which they trap their prey and hold it tightly. Their Average size ranges from 15-20 centimetres though the longest variety seen went up to a length of 50 centimetres. The diet of a cuttlefish includes other cuttlefish, shrimps, molluscs, crab and octopus. The average life expectancy of the cuttlefish is between one to two years and their predators are sharks, dolphins, seals, fishes etc. Similar to other molluscs these also have abundant stores of ink in their bodies. This ink is released when these fish are supposedly attacked. The cuttlefish ink is used for multiple purposes like making the food sweet, flavour rice and pasta, and for dyeing plastics and other materials. Cuttlefish also have a camouflage facility which they use to change the colour of their skin. This trick is aptly used to hunt and scare their prey and attack them. The giant tiger prawn is a crustacean that is actively reared for food purposes. Initially, the species was first discovered in the year 1798. The females of the species reach a length of 33 cm and their weight is around 200-320 grams. On the other hand, the males have a length of 20-25 cm and their weight can be near to 100-170 grams. The carapace and abdomen of both are banded with red and white stripes. Naturally, the Tiger prawn is found in the Indo pacific region. This goes from the eastern coast of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula to Southeast Asia, the Pacific Ocean, and northern Australia. They can be seen in the Gulf of Mexico too. Their first capturing happened in 1988 when nearly 300 of them were held from the South Eastern shore. Now they can be caught in the waters ranging from Texas to North Carolina.
