BMC is restless in their pursuit of perfection. Because of this, they re-engineered their popular Speedfox platform, and the standard-bearer, the Speedfox 01. This is a trail bike that has improved its climbing, its descending, its overall performance. It still features both 27.5 and 29er wheel choices, because they both believe big rolls better and believe people should choose the size that best reflects their riding needs. The change people talk about first is a new technology called Trailsync. Its a cable-actuated handlebar-mounted lever system that simultaneously drops the seatpost and opens up the rear suspension. Ride with your saddle high and suspension firm for the climbs and flats, drop it a bit for rough stuff, drop it all the way when letting it all hang out at high speed. The drop is 80mm for the Small, 100mm for the Medium, and both the Large and XL have 120mm. Theres a stop 35mm down before dropping the whole way. BMC routes the cable internally to both the shock and the post. The post itself is an alloy mast with a post-topper similar to what you find on seat-masted road bikes. You cut the mast to get close to the right size, and then fine-tune with the topper clamp.
When you need a bike that provides front and rear suspension but gives a cross-country vibe, the Scott Spark 900/700 HMX provides the proper tool. As with most of Scotts offerings, you choose between the lighter and more agile 27.5 wheel and the better-rolling 29er. Luckily, both are super-light, with the 27.5 coming in at 1890g, and the larger tipping the scales at 1900g, both in Medium. Scott has been tinkering with the design to make it more versatile, as that should be the calling card of any cross-country bike. Theyve improved the rear shock thanks to an ongoing collaboration with Fox. The Nude shock with DPS damping is not only easy to fine-tune when youre off the bike, but thanks to the TwinLoc lever mounted on the underside of the left grip, you can shift through three suspension settings while you ride, open, traction control, and lockout. You can also raise or lower the bottom bracket height by 7mm (and adjust the head tube angle by .5 degrees by flipping a chip at the top of the rear suspension linkage. Stick with the lower position for better stability unless you have a particularly rocky but rideable route. Finally, theyve lowered the lower part of the downtube for a practical reason: more room for a downtube-mounted water bottle.

The Electron Pro is the bad boy that came out of nowhere and helped propel the Danish team to a Bronze Medal in the Team Pursuit at the 2016 Olympic games in Rio. This was a collaborative project: Argon 18 worked with the Danish team, analyzing their needs, from stiffness to aerodynamics to power output. The result is an incredibly fast bike that tracks well when youre flying around a banked oval millimeters from your teammates or competitors. The Electron Pro was decorated as a pursuit bike in its first international outing. The shapes are designed for cheating the wind. The head tube extends far back. With the bayonet-style fork, the shape is virtually a perfect air foil. The downtube is pretty low, allowing for a smooth air transition from the front wheel to the frame. Likewise, the large bottom bracket shell, housing a threaded English bottom bracket, starts to shroud the rear wheel early. The seat tube furthers that job and the low seat stays are also aerodynamically-shaped. The frame allows for 23mm tires, front and rear, regardless of rim shape. At the top, the long, aero seatpost has a sliding rail at the top, which allows for 9cm of fore-aft adjustment. And, because pro track riders are brutally strong, the clamp is overbuilt, so that it can be torqued into place, and wont move, even with the most violent efforts.

The Pinarello GAN S is a workhorse of a bike. It comes, with the addition of Easy-Fit, in fourteen sizes, fitting everyone from the small to the tall. The frame design is also similarly wide-ranging, taking its cues from the Dogma F8 and nearly identical to the GAN, GAN RS, and GAN Disk. Pinarello starts with the Dogma when designing the GAN series bikes. The S takes the shaping and geometry of the F8 and builds it with Torayca T700 Carbon Fiber. The lower-modulus mix is more durable. But to get to the same stiffness, Pinarello needed more material. The resulting generous cost savings means a little added weight. More importantly, the frame is shaped like the F8. You can see it in the extended head tube, the way the fork crown nestles in a notch in the down tube, the aero fork legs, the FlatBack down and seat tubes and the shorter, lower seat stays. And includes the aero carbon-fiber seatpost. The shaping also owes to the need to make the bike stiff and comfortable. A problem with traditional airfoil tube shaping is that they make a bike vertically stiff and laterally compliant, the reverse of what people need. By shortening the profile of the down and seat tubes, which Pinarello calls FlatBack profile, they still have vertical give. And by cutting the tubes off at their wide point, there is still plenty of lateral stiffness to fight pedal forces. And this is before we get into Pinarellos traditional asymmetric tube designs, where they have already built in resisting pedaling forces. The F8 has a geometry built for light super flexible riders. The GAN S is built for the rest of us, similar position, just with more stack and less reach: its easy to get comfortable and feel powerful on the GAN thanks to the fact your bars dont have to be so low. There are fourteen sizes to choose from, so you can easily find one that fits. In terms of tubing shapes and geometry, it is identical to the GAN, GAN RS, and GAN Disk, with the only difference being the grade of carbon-fiber employed.
