BENTONITE Bentonite is smectite mineral clay usually montmorillonite. Bentonite presents strong colloidal properties and its volume increase several times when it absorbs water, creating gelatinous and viscous fluid. Special properties of Bentonite include hydration, swelling, water absorption, viscosity, and thixotropy thus making it suitable for a wide range of applications. Uses/Applications: Used as a general filler/chemical additive in: 1. Borehole and well-drilling Fluids to lubricate and cool the cutting tools because of their rheological properties. 2. Binder in foundry molds and pellet making. 3. Sealant and groundwater barrier in dam and water pans. 4. Adsorbent in winemaking and pet care items. 5. Pottery and ceramics to aid in plasticity.
