Steel scrap refers to those steels that have come to the end of their life and can no longer serve their purpose. Steels are ferrous metals (containing iron) - a distinguishing factor between steel and stainless steel. Scraps of steel can be classified as either industrial or pre-consumer scrap (generated during the manufacturing process) and post-consumer or obsolete scrap (discarded by consumers). Another type of steel scrap is home scrap (leftover steel pieces and trimmings in the steel mills). It is estimated that recycling rates for steel can reach up to 90%. During the process of recycling, steel scraps are melted down by a furnace that runs at approximately 3,000 degrees.
All these scraps come from various sources like automotive parts, demolished structures, construction debris, etc. And as steel can be turned back repeatedly through recycling without causing any damage or degradation, recycled steel scrap can easily do the same job as fresh steel. If anything, their quality is improved after recycling. It is because of steel scraps that the steel demand can come even close to being fulfilled. The world might witness the scarcity of steel without the steel scraps. Recycling of these scraps also conserves natural resources, reduces carbon emissions, and therefore is economically friendly. It is crucial to note that all of these factors are what make steel the most recycled material in the world.
The term "scrap" may lead you to think that it's a waste, but technically, it's not. Rather, it is a valued product in the recycling industry. Steel scrap makes a great raw material because of its inherent magnetism, which makes the separating process very easy. The world is expected to see an increase of around 10 MT in the availability of steel scraps every decade. Around 650 MT of scrap is used annually in the production of steel. This recycling process saves around 975 MT of CO2 every year. The impurities present in steel scrap are removed during the steelmaking process. Hence, the quality of steel is not sacrificed in the recycling process, the same way it does for glass and aluminium.
Steel scraps are a key commodity in the global trade industry because of their role in promoting "green steel" (by producing steel with reduced carbon emissions). This also makes these scraps help in sustaining the environment. The scrap steel price per kg is comparatively lower than iron ore, so it becomes a cost-effective method for producers to produce steel. They also save a lot more by reducing production costs that go into extracting and processing.
Some studies show that the production of steel will rise to 45 to 50% by 2050 to meet the increasing steel demand. This is where international trade comes in to ensure all these demands are met. Countries like China, India, and Japan produce a lot of steel, and therefore are consistent in their demand for steel scrap. However, the steel production is not going to be fully dependent on steel scraps anytime soon in this country because steel has a life span of around 40 to 100 years (depending on where it is being used). And a lot of steel with the potential of becoming steel scrap is “still in use”. Amidst it all, the steel demand is increasing at a rapid rate.
Stainless scrap can become hazardous waste if it comes in contact with oils, plastic, or other materials. So, as a steel scrap exporter, you need to take extra care of the quality of your product. International scrap steel buyers have certain requirements when it comes to the quality and condition. Here is what they look for:

The global trading market can be tricky when it comes to finding reliable buyers. There is a list of platforms that you can use to find buyers of all types of steel scrap. Those are as follows:
1. Sign up on B2B platforms
You can sign up on B2B platforms, such as go4WorldBusiness. This B2B platform lets you sign up for absolutely free and connect with a lot of buyers from all across the world. You just need to provide the basic information about your exporting company, provide the product description, upload product images, and you will be done. You can then move ahead with your search by searching for your steel scrap variety-specific buyer, like old steel buyers, 304 steel buyers, etc. You can not only send queries to hundreds of buyers in a day, but they will be contacting you themselves.
2. Attend trade fairs
Trade exhibitions like BIR World Recycling Convention, Waste-Tech International Exhibition, China International Fair for Trade in Services, and others are held with the purpose of letting buyers and suppliers find each other. You will be able to connect with only verified buyers and importers of a variety of steel scraps. Whether you’re selling any specific type of steel scrap or are targeting any specific country, you will be able to fulfill all of it through these trade exhibitions.
3. Use personal connections
When you are new to the international trading industry, it is much easier to just target the countries near you. And with the help of your local buyers who have some connections with the nearby countries, you will be able to meet your goal of finding “steel scrap buyers near me”. The shipping process becomes much easier when you target your nearby countries.
4. Be active on LinkedIn
As LinkedIn is a professional network, the probability of finding verified steel scrap importers becomes much higher. You can search for “steel scrap buyers” or for any other variety-specific steel, and you will be able to see a lot of buyers from different countries. However, your search doesn’t end with just finding them; you will also need to actively post on your LinkedIn account to be able to look more genuine.
