India on March 7, 2017 imposed a temporary ban on imports of agricultural products from Vietnam due to “repeated interception of quarantine pests”. Its notable that India imports coffee beans, bamboo, black pepper, cinnamon, cassia and dragon fruit from Vietnam among other products.
This is seen as a tit for tat move as the decision comes close on the heels of Vietnam announcing that it would suspend import of peanuts, cassia seed, cocoa beans, haricot beans and tamarind from India after 60 days, starting March 1.
The latest move has come as a shock for Indian businesses both big and small who import Robusta Coffee from Vietnam to make value added products such as instant coffee before re exporting them.
India also imports raw coffee from Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and Indonesia.
