Coir, or coconut fibre, is a natural fibre extracted from the outer husk of coconut and used in products such as floor mats, doormats, brushes and mattresses. Coir is the fibrous material found between the hard, internal shell and the outer coat of a coconut.
The Fiber extracted from the 'Mesocarp' or the outer layer of the coconut, coir Fiber is the longest natural Fiber as well as the strongest in terms of twist resistance. Sri Lanka has a history of using coconut Fiber to manufacture a wide range of products for home, agriculture and industrial purposes.
The Sri Lankan coconut coir and coir-based product manufacturers have been a major cottage industry in Sri Lanka for centuries. The unique technique is known as the drum system is used to extract Fiber, producing long pure Fiber, mostly suitable for the brush industry. It falls into two main categories; brown and white Fiber, which contributes to 80% and 20% respectively of the world coir Fiber demand.
