Melt Flow Index Tester indicates the uniformity of the flow rate of the polymer. This instrument measures the rate of extrusion of Molten resins through a drill of specified Length and diameter under prescribed conditions of temperature, load, and piston position. This test method covers measurement of rate of extrusion of molten resins through a die having bore diameter of 2.095 mm and a specified length of 8 mm within a stipulated time. Accordingly the unit of MFI is reported in grams/10 minutes. There are different test conditions based on the standard chart for Temperature Vs Fixed load for checking such melt index. Additionally two more tests could be incorporated in this same melt indexer such as MVR (melt volume-flow rate) and melt density for thermoplastics.
