Melamine is an organic base and a trimer of cyanamide, with a 1, 3, 5-triazine skeleton having formula C3N3(NH2)3. This white powder contains 66% nitrogen by mass and, if mixed with resins, has fire retardant properties due to its release of nitrogen gas when burned or charred, and has several other industrial uses.

MAJOR USE: In making thermosetting plastics, ire-retardant additives in paints, plastics, and paper. A melamine fibre, Basofil, has low thermal conductivity, excellent flame resistance and is self-extinguishing; this makes it useful for flame-resistant protective clothing, either alone or as a blend with other fibres.
