CHICKPEA an herbaceous annual plant belonging to the legume family. It ranks third in global legume cultivation after soybeans and beans.
Thanks to their worldwide recognition, chickpeas go by many names: Spanish pea, Turkish pea, pigeon pea, ram pea, and also chickpea, nohat (nohut), and garbanzo. Chickpea seeds can be spherical or irregular in shape, with a smooth or rough surface. Typically, they come in cream or yellow-brown color, although varieties of other colors exist.
Like all legumes, chickpea have a distinctive bean-like taste, described as nutty and earthy. There are over 40 varieties of chickpeas, but the most common worldwide are two types: kabuli large beige beans with a soft, creamy taste.
