A gasket is a mechanical seal which fills the space between two or more mating surfaces, generally to prevent leakage from or into the joined objects while under compression. Metallic Gaskets: \"Metallic Gaskets\" are gaskets that are fabricated from one or a combination of metals to the desired shape and size. Common metallic gaskets are Spiral Wound Gaskets, Double Jacketed Metal Gaskets, Solid Metal Gaskets, Corrugated Metal Gaskets, Ring Type Joint Gasket used for heat exchangers, compressors, condensers, pumps, valves and turbines. These metallic gaskets are suitable for high pressure & temperature applications and require high bolt load to seal. Non metallic gaskets are usually manufactured from materials like arimid fiber, glass fiber, elastomers, teflon (PTFE), compressed asbestos fibre (CAF), flexible graphite etc. Types are: Non Asbestos, Asbestos, Flexible Graphite, PTFE, Viton, Silicone Rubber, Neoprene and Flange Gaskets.

CORRUGATED METAL GASKET COVERED WITH GRAPHITE OR PTFE LAYER Corrugated metal gasket (CMG) consists of a metal core with concentric grooves on both sides and coated with expanded graphite, PTFE layer or non-asbestos plate. Corrugated metal gasket with soft layer on both sides is used for low pressure applications in large diameter flue gas ducts at high temperature. In addition, corrugated metal gasket is a versatile sealing element when bolt loads are low.Unlike other materials and structures, it can be very resilient. What's more, corrugated metal gasket directly replaces spiral wound gasket and eliminates inward buckling issues while creating a seal at moderate flange stresses. Ring joint metallic gasket Metal ring gasket is by smithing, heat treatment and mechanical processing. It is suitable for oil or gas pipe flange, pressure vessel, high speed joint face, valve with high temperature and high pressure. It has good sealing performance even when the pressure and temperature is not stable.The typical style r are divided into ellipse style and octagonal style according to its cross section. The standard style r gasket is made conform to the api 6a & asme b16, 20 standard, can bear 10000psi pressure at most. The octagonal style and ellipse style can be interchanged in flange with trapezum groove. Style rx is an improvement of style r in pressure resistant. It is a standard ring gasket suitable for all the flange sealing which is suitable for style r. Style by is another item with a high pressure resistant up to 15000psi. SPIRAL WOUND GASKET The spiral wound gasket is suitable for use across a wide pressure range and is therefore virtually applicable. The spiral wound gasket can be used to seal fluid pressures up to 250 bar and cryogenic temperatures as low 200C and up to elevated temperatures 550C. Due to its sturdy design the spiral wound gasket is simple to install without causing damage (although extra care should be taken during transportation and installation of large diameter gasket without guide rings). The outer guide ring serves to locate the spiral element centrally on the flange faces and prevent blow-out. By combining different winding materials and metals the gasket can be tailored to a wide variety of operating conditions. Due to its non-adhesive character the gasket is easy to remove after service. The gasket does not cause damage to the flange faces. BENEFITS OF THE CENTRING RING The spiral wound gasket outer centering ring provides the following benefits: Optimum location between the bolts. Protection of the spiral wound element. Additional security against gasket blow-out. Acts as compression limiter preventing overloading and over compression of the spiral wound element. Prevents radial-flow of soft fillers, such as P.T.F.E. For these reasons it is preferable to use spiral wound gasket with outer centering rings. On the outer ring is marked with nominal size, pressure class, standard and materials. BENEFITS OF THE INNER RING The spiral gasket inner ring provides the following benefits: Prevents radial-flow of soft fillers, such as P.T.F.E. Reduces turbulence-minimizing flow resistance and crevice corrosion. Acts as a heat shield when the spiral wound gasket is subjected to high temperatures. Inner and outer rings are particularly recommended for use on spiral wound gaskets exceeding class 600lbs, but specifically recommended for high temperatures and pressures to optimize the operational reliability of the spiral wound sealing element. MATERIAL SELECTION Material selected for the inner ring and winding metal is usually the same as the flange metal, in order to prevent corrosion and differential expansion problems. The outer centering ring is generally manufactured from carbon steel with an anti- corrosion treatment; however, the ring may also be manufactured in the same metal as the flange to prevent corrosion problems.
