Illustrations from Egyptian tombs suggest that Nile tilapia were cultured more than 3,000 years ago. The Nile tilapia is still the most widely cultured species of tilapia in Africa. The aquaculture of Nile tilapia goes back to Ancient Egypt, where it was represented by the hieroglyph. It was a symbol of rebirth in Egyptian art. Tilapia is the fourth-most consumed fish in the United States dating back to 2002. The popularity of tilapia came about due to its low price, easy preparation, and a mild taste.
