Barite, also spelled baryte, is a mineral consisting of barium sulfate (BaSO4). It's generally white or colorless, and is the main source of the element barium. This mineral has a very high specific gravity, which is in the range of 4.1 to 4.5. That's unusually high for a nonmetallic mineral. Barite is found in hydrothermal ore veins, sedimentary rocks like limestone, clay deposits, marine environments, and cavities in igneous rock. It commonly forms as large tabular crystals, clusters of crystals, or divergent plates.
Barytes (or barites) is the naturally occurring mineral form of barium sulphate. Its main properties are its high specific gravity (4.5), very low solubility; it is non-toxic, and also chemically and physically unreactive. It is estimated that 90% of the Barytes produced in the world are used only for drilling oil wells. It is also found useful in the manufacture of white pigment or extender in pigments and barium chemicals, in the glass industry and as filler in rubber, leather, textile and paper goods.

Natural Barytes are generally categorized into two different grades Snow White and Off-color. Snow white Barytes is mainly used in the Paint, Paper, Rubber and Chemical industry, while the Off-color Barytes is used in the Oil and Gas drilling operations.
