Industrial wood pellets are larger in diameter and denser than regular wood pellets used in pellet stoves or grills. They are typically 1.5 to 2 inches in diameter and have a higher energy density.
Industrial pellets are produced from a wider range of biomass materials, including wood residues, agricultural waste, and energy crops like switchgrass.
Industrial pellets are used primarily for large-scale industrial heating applications such as producing process steam, generating electricity, heating greenhouses, drying agricultural products, and other heavy-duty heating needs. Industrial pellet boilers and furnaces can be significantly larger than residential pellet boilers, often producing tens of megawatts of heat. They require a high volume of pellets and constant feeding to maintain high-capacity, steady operation.
