Ayin (hardwood) charcoal is produced in Nigeria.
Hardwood logs (Ayin, Iroko, Gmelina) are cut and air-dried to reduce moisture. The wood is stacked in earth pits or metal kilns and burned slowly in low oxygen (carbonisation). This removes moisture and volatile substances, producing high-carbon charcoal. Once cooled, it is sorted by size and packed into 25kg or 50kg bags for local sales or bulk export (20+ tons). Quality is determined by high carbon content, low ash and low moisture.
