Heavy Melting Steel (HMS):
Heavy melting steel is a designation for recyclable steel. It is categorised into two major categories: HMS 1 and HMS 2. The difference between the two is HMS 1 does not contain galvanized and cast iron, whereas HMS 2 does. Because both grades guarantee a minimum piece thickness â?? at least 1/4inch (6.3mm) for HMS 1, and 1/8 in for HMS 2 â?? consignments have a high density.
The typical constituents are plates, truck parts, structural items, large machinery parts, automatic parts, pipes, post consumer steel goods.

Aluminum scrap refers to discarded aluminum materials that can be recycled to produce new aluminum products. It is a highly valued commodity due to its cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits, as recycling aluminum significantly reduces energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
1. Product Overview
Aluminum scrap is sourced from various end-of-life products, manufacturing processes, and consumer goods. It can be categorized into different grades based on purity and form, including:
Type Description
Post-Consumer Scrap : Scrap is obtained from used products like cans.
Pre-Consumer Scrap
Scrap generated during manufacturing processes.
Dirty Alloys
Scrap that contains impurities or mixed alloys.
2. Recycling Process
The recycling of aluminum involves several steps:
Collection: Gathering scrap from various sources.
Sorting: Classifying scrap by type and quality.
Melting: Heating aluminum scrap to its melting point.
Casting: Forming new aluminum products from the molten metal.
3. Benefits of Recycling Aluminum
Energy Savings: Recycling requires only about 5% of the energy needed to produce new aluminum from ore.
Reduced Waste: Diverts scrap from landfills, promoting sustainability.
Economic Value: Recycled aluminum can be sold at a higher value compared to other recycled materials.
Chemical properties: A soft metal (face-centered cubic) with a blue-grey color and metallic luster. Melting point: 327.5â??. Boiling point: 1740â??. Relative density: d1811.3437. Soluble in nitric acid and hot concentrated sulfuric acid, insoluble in water. Uses: Used in compound semiconductors, refrigeration elements, infrared photoelectric conversion devices, high-efficiency temperature difference elements, and solders, etc. Uses: Used as analytical reagents and reducing agents Uses: Used as high-purity analytical reagents and reducing agents Uses: Used in the manufacture of cable sheaths, storage batteries, lead alloys, pigments, ammunition, sulfuric acid production equipment, and can also be used as X-ray protection screens, nuclear reactor equipment, etc. Uses: Used in storage batteries, cables, solders, etc. Uses: Used in cables, storage batteries, babbitt alloys, type alloys, and materials for X-ray protection, etc. Uses: Reducing agent for determining tin; reducing high iron to ferrous iron; used for the separation of iridium from platinum and rubidium; alloy manufacturing Uses: Mainly used in cables, storage batteries, lead smelting, scrap copper smelting, printing, solder, etc.
Clean HE9 Aluminum is the most desirable aluminum for scrapping. This is very similar to 6063 aluminum alloy which is used in production of different products due to its ability to be formed in complex shapes with smooth surfaces. Often used in window and door frames and signage.
HMS stands for heavy melting scrap, and 1 & 2 are the two grades within that definition. Heavy melting steel (HMS) or heavy melting scrap, is a designation for recyclable steel and wrought iron. It is broken up into two major categories: HMS 1 and HMS 2. The difference between the two is HMS 1 does not contain galvanized and blackened steel, whereas HMS 2 does.
Both HMS 1 & 2 comprise obsolete scrap only. That is iron and steel recovered from items demolished or dismantled at the end of their life. Because both grades guarantee a minimum piece thickness – at least 1/4inch (6.3mm) for HMS 1, and 1/8in for HMS 2 – consignments have a high density. Both also have defined maximum dimensions (usually 60in x 24in), and should be prepared to facilitate handling and charging to a furnace.
This density, sizing and preparation makes for efficient furnace operation by minimising the time to charge enough scrap for a full melt. In contrast, thin mixed scrap greatly increases charging time, cutting furnace productivity.
HMS is usually traded as a blend of 1 & 2, either a premium blend (80:20) or lower grade mixes (70:30) and (60:40).
