Coconut fiber has a high lignin content and thus a low cellulose content, as a result of which it is resilient, strong and highly durable. The remarkable lightness of the fibers is due to the cavities arising from the dried out sieve cells. The best grade fibers are light in color, gold-yellow (fiber from unripe coconuts) or brown (fiber from ripe coconuts). Other uses of brown coir (made from ripe coconut) are in upholstery padding, sacking and horticulture. White coir, harvested from unripe coconuts, is used for making finer brushes, string, rope and fishing nets. Coir is a coarse fiber extracted from the fibrous outer shell of a coconut. The individual fiber cells are narrow and hollow, with thick walls made of cellulose. White coir is harvested from the coconuts before they are ripe. The fibers are white or light brown in color and are smooth and fine. They are generally spun to make yarn that is used in mats or rope. Brown coir is harvested from fully ripened coconuts. It is thicker and stronger and has greater abrasion resistance than white coir. It is typically used in mats, brushes, and sacking. The coir fiber is relatively waterproof and is one of the few natural fibers resistant to damage by salt water. Both modulus and tensile strength depend strongly on the type of fiber (bundle or single filament) and moisture content.

Coir fiber is relatively water-proof. The major use of white coir is in rope manufacture. Brown coir is used in floor mats and doormats, brushes, mattresses, floor tiles and sacking. Small amount is also made into twine. In horticulture, coir is a strongly recommended substitute for sphagnum moss because it is free of bacterial and fungal spores, and produces good results without the environmental damage caused by peat mining.
