Application
Packaged hydrogen chloride (HCl) is used in a range of industries and applications including:
Chemicals: To promote and regenerate catalysts in the petrochemical industry and to add viscosity to oils.
Also used for hydrochlorinations, e.g. production of methyl chloride, oxichlorinations and vinyl chloride.
Hydrogen chloride is also used to produce sulfuric chlorohydrins, synthetic rubbers, etc.
Electronics: High purity gas is widely used in the electronics industry. It is a chlorine carrier produced by high temperature cracking.
Applications: scouring furnaces (quartz chambers), dissolved in water as an aqueous cleaning agent to prepare metal surfaces for electro plating, selective etching of windows in electronic microcircuits and carrier for non-volatile elements in the form of gaseous chloride.
Food & Beverages: To remove the remaining fibres from cotton seeds after the cotton wool has been separated and before the seed is stored for re-sowing next season and also to separate cotton from wood.
Steel & Metals: Used in the production of hard metal.
Pharma & Biotechnology: Used in pharmaceutical synthesis.
1.Electronic grade usage: It is mainly used for gas phase polishing, epitaxial base corrosion and carbide manufacturing of single crystal silicon in semiconductor device production.
2.Chemical grade usage: Pharmaceutical intermediates, food and feed additives, chemical reagents and film developers and other fine chemicals manufacturing industry.
3.Industrial grade usage: Synthesis of pesticide intermediates, feed additives, chemical reagents and other fine chemicals
Material:
Most hydrogen chloride is used in the production of hydrochloric acid. It is also an important reagent in other industrial chemical transformations.
Semiconductor:
In the semiconductor industry, it is used to both etch semiconductor crystals and to purify silicon via trichlorosilane (SiHCl3).
Laboratory:
In the laboratory, anhydrous forms of the gas are particularly useful for generating chloride-based Lewis acids, which must be absolutely dry for their Lewis sites to function.
Hydrogen chloride is colorless, with a melting point of -114.2 degrees and a boiling point of -85 degrees. It does not burn in the air and is thermally stable. It decomposes only at about 1500 C. It has a choking odor, has a strong irritation to the upper respiratory tract, and is corrosive to the eyes, skin and mucous membranes. Its density is greater than air. Its aqueous solution is hydrochloric acid. Concentrated hydrochloric acid is volatile.
Hydrogen chloride is a corrosive, non-combustible gas that does not react with water but is easily soluble in water. The air often exists in the form of hydrochloric acid smoke. Soluble in ethanol and ether, as well as various other organics; soluble in water, at 25 C and 1 atmosphere, 1 volume of water can dissolve 503 volumes of hydrogen chloride gas.
