Ferro-chrome is produced by electric arc carbothermic reduction of chromite. Increasing amounts are coming from Russia and China. The production of stainless steel with chromium content of 10 to 20% is the main application of ferro-chrome. Over 80% of the ferro-chrome of the world is utilised in the production of stainless steel. It is also used when it is desired to add chromium to carbon steel. According to the content of carbon, the ferro-chrome is divided into high carbon ferro-chrome, Medium carbon ferro -chrome, low carbon ferro-chrome, extra-low carbon ferro-chrome etc. High carbon ferro-chrome (C: 4~8%), medium carbon ferro-chrome (C: 0.5~4%), low carbon ferro-chrome (C: 0.15~0.50%), extra-low carbon ferro-chrome (C: 0.06%), micro carbon ferro-chrome (C: 0.03% max.)
