The bonito tuna is a smaller specie compared to its close relatives, such as skipjack tuna, which can reach up to 50kg, and yellowfin tuna (also known as ahi tuna or light tuna) can reach up to 135kg. Bonito rarely grow more than 12kg. Pacific and atlantic bonito meat has a firm texture and a darkish color. Bonito has a moderate fat content and it is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. The meat of young or small bonito can be of lighter color, close to that of skipjack tuna, and is sometimes used as a cheaper substitute of skipjack, especially for canning purposes.
