Hawthorn inflorescence Crataegi folium cum flore is rich in flavonoids (mainly including hyperoside, vitexin and quercetin), polyphenols, catechins and small amounts of procyanidins. Hawthorn inflorescence products may be used to alleviate symptoms of temporary cardiac action disruption symptoms with the nervous origin, e.g. heart palpitation, after excluding a severe condition by a physician. They may be also used to reduce mild symptoms accompanying mental stress and to facilitate sleeping. Hawthorn fruit Crataegifructus presents composition similar to the inflorescence, yet with different component proportion. Procyanidins and catechins form the majority of the fruit, with a significantly smaller amount of flavonoids. Also, raw material contains vitamins A and C, as well as sorbitol. Hawthorn fruit demonstrates action similar to the inflorescence and additionally provides a diuretic and anti-inflammatory effect. It may be used to produce preserves, jams and liqueurs. Hawthorn fruit is a pharmacopeial raw material (FP X 04/2013:1220).
