Cost Insurance Freight (CIF) is one of the 13 Incoterms published by the International Chamber of Commerce. The challenge of preparing a quotation is ensuring all the required cost items are included. Many of the cost items are readily available to the seller. Other cost items will have to come from export service providers, such as a freight forwarder or a banker.
Even though freight cost is a piece of information that is provided by the freight forwarder, it is strongly recommended to include this piece of information along with cost and insurance amount.
Many CIF importers are unpleasantly surprised by substantial charges upon freight arrival. This, in turn, weakens the business relationship you're trying to establish with the buyer. In the long run, what matters is reliable and genuine buyers, and a happy buyer is the key to more business recommendations, eventually helping you maximise your profits in the larger scheme of things.
